after a rehearsal for The Miser
November 2001 - Photo by Jim Johnson:

Rick in his study, circa early 2001, photo by Julia Oesterle. What's all that stuff? Visible around the room, in no particular order are: lots of books, the official flibzorp poster-child, a pink flamingo, a wooden swan, a Moomintroll doll, a picture of Sarasvati, CDs containing the complete musical works of R McGowan, a painting of San Juan Island, a sombrero, an extension cord, three Yamaha TX802 synthesizers, two mixers, a computer monitor, the Madonna of Port Lligat, an electric piano, a Kareem Danish demo CD, a chair, and a wooden desk...

This is was taken in 1977 as a passport photo and for affixing to my application for a small university in Tokyo. My  hair was shorter than it had been...

A blast from the high school past... Here are two pictures from formal dances. The picture on the left was taken at the 1974 Junior Prom with my "just a friend" Sherry Bartlett. You can just barely see the beloved 4-inch platform shoes I was wearing. The one on the right is from the Homecoming dance, also 1974, with my "just a friend" Marie Degraffenreid. (Oh, and if you know where Marie is these days, give a holler.)

This was taken around 1962 or 1963 in front of the Gateway Inn just outside the western entrance to Mount Rainier National Park. (The Inn was still there when I visited in August 2002, but the totem poles are now gone.) I'm in the lower left with Mom and my two sisters...

Here is another bit of ancient history: the family at Thanksgiving, 1985. Left to right are me, Fred Beckey, Louise, Devi, Kili, Dick McGowan...

In the late 1980s I worked in Tokyo. I plan to post a few more pictures from that era, but for now, here are two. On the left is me with some ancient computer hardware of the day. On the right you can see me, Richard Hamilton, Steve Millsaps, and Jiro Monden at the Unix Pacific office. Both pictures were taken autumn 1986.

Pictures of Balto and me in the summer of 2002. One the left, we're pausing by a river south of Hood River, Oregon. On the right, we're about to embark on a forbidden hike in the alpine meadows of Mt Rainier. Photos by Leela Elliott.

This rare picture of me with Shira Kammen was taken on September 28, 2002 after a Hausmusik concert in Albany, California. Note my extended antennae...

This was taken at Thanksgiving 2002, and is a picture of family & friends in Berkeley.

Well, this isn't a pictures of me, but the three mountaineers pictured are, left to right, my father Richard McGowan, Fred Beckey, and Allen Steck. This was taken in 2002 at Dad's house in Berkeley.

This picture of me, Leela, and JoAnn Castle was taken in Venice, Florida, on January 18, 2003. JoAnn had just given a concert and we stopped by to have her CD autographed...

Two more pictures of me. On the left, in my study (August 2003). You can still see the pink flamingo and the Moomintroll. On the right is me paying attention at a meeting in December 2003 (photo by Richard Cook).

Sniffed! At the Albany Bulb on my grand day out with celebrated artist Ken Scott (who took the photo), July 28, 2004. If you look close, you can see the new beard that Leela has me trying out.

Halloween 2004! Here is me, posing as Erik Satie and his Purple Muse (my wife Leela). Photo by Linda Caplinger.

Here are some miscellaneous pictures. Left to right: (1) Rick with Balto and trash in December 2006; (2) Rick McGowan, Fred Beckey, Bruce McCubbrey at the AAC meeting, March 2007; (3) Pam, Rick, Barb, and Nicole - all formerly of Mountain Travel - in April 2007.

May 27, 2007: On the left, I can be seen reading on the patio beneath our relatively new wooden trellis. Note the papyrus in the background while I'm reading Lauren Haney's "Right Hand of Amon" and wearing an old Unicode T-shirt. September 12, 2007: On the right I'm sitting at the breakfast table in one of my favorite shirts, looking at some nice flowers while I enjoy my poached egg on toast.

In June 2007, Leela and I ran the Rogue River with James Henry River Journeys (Jimmy Katz, Shira Kammen, Tish Berlin, and friends). A fabulous trip was had by all. Left to right you can see: Rick, Rick + Shira's chicken, Jimmy Katz + Rick, Tish + Shira.

In June 2008, I went on a climb of Mt Shasta. Didn't make the summit, but had a grueling time anyway... On the left is me on the way up from the trailhead. On the right is me at about 11,000 feet with the sunrise in the background. (Photos by Glenn Phipps.)

In July 2008, I went with family and friends to Mt Rainier on a memorial climb for my father. Left to right: (1) Rick on the trail; (2) Ken, Glenn, and Rick; (3) Rick at Camp Muir; (4) Glenn Phipps; (5) Ken Phipps; (6) Devi and Rick.

Then, in August, I had my 50th birthday, and got a cool Hawaiian shirt, so I had this picture taken for my Facebook page:

On April 3, 2009, a friend and I went to see Suzanne Ramsey (Kitten on the Keys) in her new one-woman show, "Does This Piano Make My Ass Look Big?" up north in San Francisco. Of course, when it came time for audience participation, I was chosen to be festooned with cute piggy bra, ears, and tail... then get down for Cool Whip Licking 101. This isn't the kind of show you usually write home to Mom about, but it certainly made my trip to the Big City memorable! Thanks to Jeremy for immortalizing the moments, and to Mama Calizo's Voice Factory for hosting Suzanne.
